The change of Japan's capital occurred when Emperor Kanmu decided to move from Nara at the end of the 8th century.

This city would then remain the capital for more than a thousand years.

The area is surrounded by numerous mountains and rivers, making it a natural castle and an ideal place for an Emperor's home.

"I name this capital Heian-Kyo", said Emperor Kanmu in 794.

The people of Japan now call this place "Kyoto".
